COBALT partners with Lexu AI to help revolutionise legal research in the Baltics

Lexu AI, a Latvian legal tech startup, has teamed up with COBALT to launch an innovative artificial intelligence legal research platform—the first of its kind in the Baltic States.
Lexu AI’s objective in developing a new Latvian court ruling research platform was not only to enhance the functionality of the existing government-operated search tool but also to introduce advanced artificial intelligence features designed to significantly reduce research time and improve search accuracy.
To achive this vision, Lexu AI partnered with the COBALT team, bringing over 35 years of experience in the Baltic legal market.
Throughout this collaboration, COBALT experts provided insights into the daily research challenges and needs of legal professionals. The lawyers involved in the project played a crucial role in developing Lexu AI’s suite of tools and enhancing its real-world usability. Additionally, the firm was instrumental in the pilot testing phase, offering detailed feedback to refine and optimises the platform’s final toolset.
“The partnership with Lexu AI was the logical next step to our commitment of driving our firm’s digital transformation and legal tech adoption. More broadly, we are also happy to contribute to an innovation that will enhance the transparency and predictability of case law. This is critical for an attractive business environment,” comments Uģis Zeltiņš, a partner at COBALT Latvia.
Lexu AI platform provides lawyers with a seamless browser-based experience. AI-powered search allows users to describe what they’re looking for rather than rely solely on keyword-based queries. Instant AI-generated case summaries, similar ruling search and advanced AI-powered filtering drastically cut research time.
Lexu AI stands out not only as the first Baltic solution of its kind, but also for its responsible approach to AI deployment in global legal tech space. While many legal tech offerings rely on chat-based or retrieval augmented generation models with high error rates, Lexu AI prioritises strict accuracy, minimising the risk of incorrect outputs:
1. Vector Search, Not Chat
Instead of forcing users to guess precise keywords, Lexu AI’s machine learning-powered vector search engine allows free-form descriptions. Results presented are actual rulings with highlighted passages, bypassing error-prone chatbot-style responses.
2. Advanced Filters with AI Indexing
Traditional tools fail when legal text references a range of provisions (e.g., “Civil law, Arts. 7–9”) or uses ambiguous abbreviations. Lexu AI’s combined boolean search and AI-driven indexing captures the entire span, enabling such new filters by law article or judge name. This hybrid approach radically increases accuracy and usability.
3. Synergistic High-Precision Search Ecosystem
All of Lexu AI’s search methods—AI vector search, boolean search, and advanced indexing—work together to reveal rulings that conventional keyword queries would miss. This synergy fosters unprecedented accuracy, reducing the chance of overlooking crucial case law. Lawyers can instantly locate even nuanced references, reducing research time while vastly improving the scope and depth of their findings.
This integrated suite sets new standards for efficiency, accuracy, and convenience in Latvian legal research.
Lexu AI and COBALT continue their collaboration to enhance the current offering and develop innovative AI-driven legal research capabilities across Europe.
