INTERPOL deleted data of COBALT’s client from INTERPOL’s database of wanted persons

The Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files granted COBALT’s client’s application for the deletion of the client’s data from INTERPOL’s database of wanted persons, having found that the Russian Federation had improperly used INTERPOL’s resources to pursue the individual.

Having considered the factual and legal circumstances of the case, the Commission concluded that the information submitted by the Russian Federation raised serious concerns regarding its compliance with INTERPOL’s applicable rules. It therefore determined that the continued retention and processing of the client’s data in the INTERPOL Information System was incompatible with those rules and ordered the data to be deleted.

The Commission’s decision underscores the importance of INTERPOL’s control mechanisms in ensuring that only data compliant with the organisation’s rules is processed within the INTERPOL Information System.

Earlier in the same matter, the Criminal Cases Department of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia set aside the decision of the Prosecutor General’s Office to extradite the client to the Russian Federation. The Supreme Court found that extradition would expose the client to a risk of torture and that essential legal safeguards would be lacking.
