The Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files has granted an application submitted on behalf of COBALT’s client for the deletion of the client’s data from INTERPOL’s database of wanted persons. The client had been the subject of an international search request circulated through INTERPOL at the request of the Russian Federation.

In 2024, following the client’s brief detention, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Latvia refused to extradite the client to the Russian Federation. However, the client’s data remained in the INTERPOL Information System. COBALT therefore submitted an application to the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files on the client’s behalf, seeking the deletion of the data.

After proceedings lasting two years, the Commission granted the application and ordered the deletion of the client’s data from the INTERPOL Information System.

The Commission’s decision underscores the importance of INTERPOL’s oversight mechanisms in safeguarding individual rights, particularly where there is a risk of misuse of international police cooperation mechanisms. It also highlights the need for effective legal protection in circumstances where a state has refused to extradite an individual, yet the individual’s data remains in the INTERPOL Information System.

The client was represented in the INTERPOL proceedings by COBALT Senior Associate Marija Majore, the team of experts also included Managing Partner Lauris Liepa.
